Drawing Inks from Oak Galls, Paintbrushes and Pens at THE DUKES OF WEST BARNS (DUNBAR) - 11th May

£75.00

*15% off for booking both workshops on the 10th and 11th

During this workshop, you will delve into the alchemical world of ancient ink. We will reveal some of the recipes and methods which were applied in ink manufacturing during the middle ages and how they were then used. We will witness the reactive relationship between iron and tannin and how this combination has been crucial to ink formulation throughout history.

You will experience and learn how to make rich dark writing and drawing inks based on intriguing medieval recipes, as well as the time old ink made from oak galls. We will also be making inks from some more unusual sources that can be foraged from the local landscape.

Alongside ink making, participants will learn how to make various types of dip pens from reed and bamboo, and an exclusive to this workshop, you will learn how to make a paintbrush!

You will take home a selection of handmade pens, a paintbrush or two, and beeswax sealed viles of inks that you have made (you will learn how to seal the viles with beeswax).
