Colours of the Lindesfarne Gospels, DUKES OF WEST BARNS nr DUNBAR, 19th Oct
In this workshop we will explore the Lindisfarne gospels from the perspective of the materials used in its manufacture.
You will learn about each colour of the gospels, how they were created, and using authentic materials of the time, you will create your own inks and paints (replica pigments for toxic pigments), using binders that would have been used in the original works.
You will learn how to craft your own calligraphy pen and, using templates, you will create a pattern from the book using the colours and inks made during the day to give your pattern authentic colour.
Alongside these activities, you will learn about the assumed creators of this magnificent work and the time in which it was made. Widely considered a masterpiece of early Hiberno-Saxon or Insular art, we will explore how the imagery used by it’s creators combines a variety of influences and how colour was used to achieve the lavish decoration.
You will go home with an exclusive Old Mill Arts booklet on the colours of the Lindesfarne gospels, a bottle of oak gall ink, your own handcrafted calligraphy pen, homemade verdigris, and your own piece inspired by the gospels.
