Introduction to Natural Dyeing, OMA STUDIO, 22nd and/or 23rd August
Are you overwhelmed by mordanting? Wanting to get going but don’t know where to start?
This workshop is designed to give you the confidence to begin your journey with natural dyeing, or to build on some experience you already have. Join us for either day one, both days, or, if you have some experience with natural dying already, just day two.
DAY ONE:
You will learn how to prepare cotton, linen and wool for dyeing including cleaning and mordanting with alum and tannins. You will be given clear guidance on where to start and how to keep these processes simple so as not to get overwhelmed. Please note: we will be using samples of fibres to dye with, not larger pieces as this is an introductory workshop, the aim is to give you a good foundation on which to continue your journey and take it to where ever suits your work.
You will learn about which plants give colour, which are more ‘light fast’ and where you can find/grow or buy them from. From some of these plants you will learn how to make a colour rich dye dye pot, experiencing the making of around 8 pots using a mixture of plant types.
You will go home with a good range of labelled swatches for future reference, and a through set of notes to help you to continue dyeing at home or in your studio.
DAY TWO:
Using the fibres dyed from the previous day, you will learn how to create rainbows of colour by ‘over-dying’. In order to complete the colour wheel, you will learn how to make a simple indigo dye pot which will be used for colour blending.
Alongside creating colour blends, you will learn about modifying colour and how plants are able to change colour and tones in certain conditions.
This day of colour modification will allow you to experience the alchemy of plant colour, these joy filled experiences bring so much magic to the dye process and are a good way to get hooked on plant colour.
You will go home with more labelled swatches for future reference, and a second set of notes to help you to continue dyeing at home or in your studio.
