The Colour of Plants, LOGIE STEADING (FORRES), 14th and/or 15th March

from £75.00

This weekend of celebrating colour from plants can be booked as individual days or, as a weekend with a discount for booking both days.

DAY ONE (14th March) you will be learning how to work with TREES to create rich and satisfying colours and materials.

You will begin by learning about the range of drawing charcoals that can be made from different trees, and from this how to also make a rich and beautiful paint.

You will then experience the considerable variety of inks that can be created using trees, some of these are perhaps familiar such as oak gall and walnut and others more obscure such as colours from alder catkins or hemlock fir tree root. You will go home with a range of these inks in bottles.

In conjunction to inks we’ll also demonstrate the relationship between ink and dye and on on a small scale show dyes colouring some pre mordanted fabrics such as wool.

You will then learn about the magical reaction between tannin and iron used to darken colours. This can be employed to achieve very effective mark making and time will be given to try out making beautiful layered patterns.

Finally you will learn about tree based binders and how and to what surfaces tree inks can be applied.

DAY TWO (15th March) you will journey into the colours found in a variety of CULTIVATED PLANTS.

To begin, you will be introduced to a historical method of drawing out colours from flowers to create colour rich concentrates. This method doesn’t require any heat, just some flowers of choice and some simple equipment.

After experiencing how to create colours in this way you will then be introduced to the hot method of drawing out colours from plants. This forms the basis of how to make most botanical inks and some of the plants that’ll be involved on the day include coreopsis, weld, marigold and madder.

Once you have become more familiar with how to draw out colours in these ways we will then turn our attention to the Indigo containing plants. This will include how to use the indigo pigment to make different materials and how to extend colour ranges by adding it to other plant inks.

This will be further demonstrated and experimented with by painting onto swatches and then over layering to ever extend the variety of potential colours.

The day will also feature learning about thickeners and binders for inks and how to make them and use them. At the conclusion of each day participants will have a section of materials to take home with accompanying notes for further studying and reference.

These are thorough introductory workshops giving you the solid basis to explore further, and to join one of our advanced workshops in the future.

We have paired these workshops as together they give the fundamentals of making plant inks and will give you a solid foundation on which to continue.
