The Early Colours: An in depth workshop in pre medieval palettes and artists tools, OMA STUDIO, 8th Sept - 10th Sept
*20% reduction for early bird booking. Available until July 16th.
In this three day workshop, you will travel back to times long ago, gaining a broad understanding and experience of the colours and materials used in the pre medieval world. We will ponder the cosmology of colour and the age old intertwined relationships between the practitioner, the materials and the practice.
Using authentic pigments, you will be guided through a visual colour map of trade routes and histories during this period. Emphasis will be given to the significance of colour, where minerals, plants and insects were sourced and their symbolic and economic importance within cultures.
You will learn about azurite from Armenia, cinnabar from Spain, green earth from Cyprus, kermes gathered from Mediterranean oak trees, madder from Turkey, indigo from Baghdad (known as Baghdad Blue), saffron from Persia, and much more.
You will experience transforming these colour sources into various creative media following historical recipes to achieve high quality creative materials and although colour will be the main focus of this workshop, there will also be opportunity to craft artists tools such as brushes, pens and ink wells.
Over the course of the three days you will:
create your own palette of ancient colours including pigments and paints you can use at home.
receive an exclusive Old Mill Arts booklet which accompanies the workshop and includes reference notes, images, paint samples and recipes.
go home with surface samples illustrating various historical surface preparations.
