Trysting Trees: Hawthorn, at THE DILSTON PHYSIC GARDEN (contact to be put on waitlist) 24th and 25th May

£130.00
SOLD OUT

*SOLD OUT, please email to be put on the wait list.

In this weekend long workshop we shall be journeying into all things Hawthorn.

This is a tree with a significant place in the fabric of social history of this land and on the Saturday morning of the workshop there will be an opportunity to explore some of this history alongside the tree's ecological relationships to other plants, insects and animals.

Hawthorn is also a potent provider of medicine as well as a food source in some of the ways that people have interacted with the tree. There will be examples of some of these and a few samples to try.

On Sunday morning the focus is on the folklore and mythology associated and connected to Hawthorn. Accompanying this will be images and tales of it's recurring symbolism through time.

During the afternoon of each day the emphasis will shift to creative material possibilities from Hawthorn. You will learn how to make dye colours, paper, inks and creative tools using Hawthorn, and will have time to use our these materials to begin to build up a visual language of this magnificent and significant tree.

WORKSHOP EXCLUSIVE: For this workshop we have partnered with herbalist and musician Sarah Jane Scoten aka Juniper Wood Herbs

Sarah Jane Scouten is a medical herbalist and songwriter living in southwest Scotland. Originally from Canada, she dove deeply into the natural world of Britain during the pandemic and emerged with a herbal medicine practice -- Juniper Wood Herbs -- and a collection of traditional ballads she calls The Herbal Songbook. Part of Trysting Trees, Sarah Jane will lead a practical workshop on the science and practice of making and taking hawthorn as medicine. Caution: singing may occur.

Find out more about the Trysting Trees project here.

PLEASE NOTE: This workshop will be held at the Dilston Physic Garden in Northumberland
